How to Play Call of Duty: Black Ops Online on PS3 (2024)

Call of Duty: Black Ops (2010) PS3 multiplayer is still accessible but player counts are very low. Here is the connection process and what to expect.

Step-by-Step

  1. Network: Connect PS3 via Ethernet (recommended) or Wi-Fi. Test connection: Settings → Network Settings → Internet Connection Test.
  2. Sign In: Log into PlayStation Network (PSN) account.
  3. Launch Game: Insert disc or launch digital version.
  4. Main Menu → Multiplayer: Select "Multiplayer" → "Public Match" or "Private Match."
  5. DLC Check: If you own map packs (First Strike, Escalation, Annihilation, Rezurrection), they auto-load. Without them, you'll only match on base maps.
  6. Create a Class: Customize loadouts (unlock tokens at level 4, 10, etc.).
  7. Find Match: "Quick Match" searches all modes; "Server Browser" (if patched) lets you filter.

Current Reality (2024+)

  • Population: Often <100 concurrent players worldwide. Matchmaking can take 10+ minutes.
  • Hackers/Modders: Prevalent on PS3—god mode, aimbot, deranking. Report via PSN profile.
  • No Official Support: Activision/Treyarch provide zero maintenance. Leaderboards broken.

Better Alternatives

  • Private Matches: Invite friends via PSN for clean games.
  • Plutonium / IW4x (PC): Community-run clients with anti-cheat, dedicated servers, thousands of players.
  • Backward Compatibility: Black Ops is not BC on Xbox One/Series. Black Ops II and III are.

If nostalgia drives you, host a private lobby. For active public play, move to PC community clients or newer CoD titles.
