Can PS3 Slim Play PS2 Games? Backward Compatibility Explained
No. The PS3 Slim (CECH-2000 series and later) cannot play PS2 discs or PS2 Classics.
Why It Was Removed
Hardware Cost: Launch PS3 ("Fat") included the Emotion Engine (PS2 CPU) + Graphics Synthesizer—effectively a PS2 on the motherboard. This added ~$100+ to BOM.
Slim Redesign: To hit $299, Sony removed the EE+GS chips. Later firmware added software emulation for a limited list of PS2 Classics (digital only), but this was also removed before the Slim launch.
How to Play PS2 Games Today
Launch PS3 (CECHA/B/C/E, 20/60/80GB): Full hardware backward compatibility.
PlayStation 2 Console: Native, best compatibility.
PC Emulation (PCSX2): High compatibility, upscaling, widescreen patches.
PS4/PS5 (PS2 Classics): Select titles re-released digitally (e.g., GTA San Andreas, Dark Cloud).
