PS2 Games on PS3 — Compatibility by Model

Standard PS3 models cannot play PS2 discs. Backward compatibility was removed after launch models.

Model Breakdown

Exceptions

• PS2 Classics (PS Store): ~50 titles re-released as native PS3 ports (trophy support). Delisted but redownloadable if owned.
• Cobra/PS2EMU (CFW only): Custom firmware enables software emulation on any PS3 — piracy risk, ban risk, instability

Best Way to Play PS2 Today

1. PS2 Slim + FreeMCBoot + OPL — Internal HDD/USB/ETH loading, GSM upscaling
2. PCSX2 (PC) — 4K, widescreen patches, save states, best compatibility
3. PS4/PS5 "Classics" — Select titles (e.g., GTA San Andreas, Dark Cloud) with trophies

Original hardware or PC emulation beats partial PS3 BC.
