PS3 Games on PS2? Impossible. Hardware Incompatible.

No. PlayStation 3 games cannot run on PlayStation 2.

Why It's Not Just "Software"

  • PS3 games are compiled for Cell + RSX. PS2 cannot execute PPE/SPE instructions.
  • PS2 lacks pixel/vertex shaders (fixed function). PS3 games require Shader Model 3.0+.
  • Blu-ray drive physically absent. DVD cannot hold PS3 assets (10–50 GB).
  • No hypervisor / OtherOS / Linux path on retail PS2.

Reverse: PS2 Games on PS3

  • Launch PS3s (CECHA/B/C/E, 20/60/80GB): Hardware BC (Emotion Engine + GS on board). 100% compatibility.
  • Later PS3s (80GB CECHE, 160GB+): Software BC (partial, ~70% titles).
  • Slim / Super Slim: No BC. Use PS2 Classics (digital, PS Store — closed 2021) or homebrew (POPS emulator) on CFW.

Keep a PS2 (or modded PS3/PC with PCSX2) for PS2 games. Keep a PS3 (or PC with RPCS3) for PS3 games. They don't cross.
