Does PS3 Need to Be On to Charge Controller? No — Standby Works

No. The PS3 charges controllers via USB even when fully powered off (standby/red light), as long as it's plugged into AC power.

Charging Speed Differences

  • PS3 On (XMB / Game): ~500 mA (USB 2.0 spec) — ~2–3 hrs for full charge (1300 mAh Sixaxis/DualShock 3).
  • PS3 Standby (Red LED): ~500 mA maintained — same speed.
  • PS3 Off (Unplugged): No charge.
  • Wall USB Charger (5V/1A+): ~1000–2000 mA — 1–1.5 hrs. Safe if 5V regulated.
  • PC USB Port: 500 mA (USB 2.0) or 900 mA (USB 3.0) — similar to PS3.

Best Practice

  • Leave PS3 in standby (red light) for overnight charging — convenient, no fan noise.
  • Use a dedicated USB wall charger (Anker, UGREEN, etc.) for fastest charge without console wear.
  • Controller shows slow flashing (charging) → solid (charged). Press PS button to check battery bars.

No need to leave the PS3 fully on. Standby or wall charger is ideal.
