Using a Headset on PS3 – Complete Setup Guide (Wired, Bluetooth, USB)

The PS3 supports three headset types. Setup differs per connection method.

🎧 1. Wired 3.5 mm Headset (via Controller)

Works with: Any 3.5 mm TRRS headset (CTIA standard – mic + stereo)

  1. Plug into controller's 3.5 mm jack (front, below PS button)
  2. Settings → Accessory Settings → Audio Device Settings
  3. Input Device: "Headset" (or "Headset Connector")
  4. Output Device: "Headset"
  5. Microphone Level: Adjust while speaking – target 50–70%
  6. Output to Headphones: "All Audio" (game + chat) or "Chat Audio"

Note: Original Sixaxis (no 3.5 mm) – cannot use wired headset. DualShock 3 / later Sixaxis revisions have the jack.

🔵 2. Bluetooth Headset (Official or Generic)

  1. Settings → Accessory Settings → Manage Bluetooth Devices → Register New Device
  2. Put headset in pairing mode (usually hold power 5–7 sec → flashing red/blue)
  3. Select headset → enter passkey (usually 0000 or 1234)
  4. After pairing: Audio Device Settings → Input/Output Device → select your headset
  5. Test: "Audio Device Settings" → "Test Microphone" / "Test Output"

Compatible Official: Sony PS3 Bluetooth Headset (CECHYA-0080), PS4/PS5 headsets (pair but limited features)

🔌 3. USB Headset / USB Audio Adapter + 3.5 mm Headset

  1. Plug USB dongle/headset into PS3 front USB port
  2. Settings → Accessory Settings → Audio Device Settings
  3. Input/Output Device → select the USB device (usually "USB Headset" or "C-Media USB Audio")
  4. Adjust levels

Best for: PC headsets (HyperX, Logitech, SteelSeries) – plug USB dongle in

🎮 In-Game Chat Settings

  • Most games: Start → Settings → Voice Chat → set "Push-to-Talk" or "Open Mic", volume sliders
  • Cross-game chat: Not supported on PS3 (PS4+ only). Use party chat in-game only.

Troubleshooting

  • Mic not working: Check "Microphone Level" meter moves when you speak. Try another controller/port.
  • Echo/Feedback: Lower "Output to Headphones" volume. Enable "Noise Cancellation" if headset has it.
  • Bluetooth disconnects: Interference (Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz). Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi or wired headset.
  • No audio at all: Settings → Sound Settings → Audio Output → ensure "HDMI" or "AV Multi" not forcing output away from headset
