Do You Need PlayStation Plus for Online on PS4? Yes

Yes. PlayStation Plus (Essential tier minimum) is required for online multiplayer on PS4.

What Works Without PS Plus

• Single-player campaigns.
• Media apps (Netflix, YouTube, Spotify, Disney+).
• Free-to-play games (Fortnite, Apex Legends, Warframe, Destiny 2)—Sony exempts F2P.
• Game updates, store browsing, trophies sync.

What PS Plus Essential ($59.99/yr) Gives

• Online multiplayer (all non-F2P titles).
• 2-3 free monthly games (keep while subbed).
• 100 GB cloud save storage.
• Exclusive store discounts (10-75% off).
• Share Play (stream your game to a friend).

Higher tiers (Extra, Premium) add game catalog, classics, cloud streaming.

Subscribe if you want online co-op/competitive. Skip if strictly single-player + F2P.
