Connecting PS3 to Computer Monitor: HDMI, DVI, VGA & Component Guide

Connection Methods

1. HDMI (Best Quality)

  • Most common/recommended.
  • Needs: HDMI cable, HDMI ports on both PS3 and monitor.
  • Pros: Best video/audio, least hassle.
  • Cons: Older monitors may lack HDMI.

2. DVI (High-Quality Video)

  • Digital video, good picture.
  • Needs: DVI cable, DVI ports on both.
  • Pros: Good quality.
  • Cons: May need DVI-to-HDMI adapter if PS3 only has HDMI.

3. VGA (Older Monitors)

  • Lower resolution than HDMI/DVI.
  • Needs: VGA cable, VGA ports on both.
  • Pros: Works with legacy monitors.
  • Cons: Lower quality.

4. Component Video (Decent Alternative)

  • Better than VGA, below HDMI.
  • Needs: Component cables, component ports on both.
  • Pros: Decent quality.
  • Cons: Less common than HDMI/VGA.

Connection Steps

  1. Power off PS3 and monitor.
  2. Connect chosen cable from PS3 video output to monitor input.
  3. Power on monitor, then PS3.
  4. Select correct input source on monitor (HDMI, DVI, VGA, Component).

Important Notes

  • Audio: If monitor lacks speakers, connect PS3 audio out to external speakers (3.5mm or optical).
  • Resolution: Monitor max resolution may differ from PS3 output—adjust settings on either device.
  • Compatibility: Ensure both devices have required ports for chosen method.
