PS3 Turning On By Itself? Controller/Console Troubleshooting
The PS3 cannot turn on solely via a controller signal unless specific settings are enabled or hardware is faulty. Here's the diagnostic checklist:
Most Likely Causes
"Remote Play" / "Turn On via Network" Enabled: Settings > Power Save > Set "Remote Play" or "Turn On via Network" to Off. This prevents wake-on-LAN/Bluetooth signals from booting the console.
Bluetooth Interference / Stuck Button: A debris-stuck PS button on *any* paired controller (or a 3rd party dock) sends constant "on" signals. Remove batteries from all controllers. If it stops, clean/replace that controller.
HDMI-CEC (Bravia Sync / VIERA Link / Anynet+): Your TV remote turning on the TV sends a "wake" signal via HDMI. Disable "HDMI Device Link" on PS3 (Settings > Display) OR disable CEC on TV.
Faulty Power Supply / Capacitors: If it turns on with *zero* controllers paired and HDMI unplugged, the PSU or motherboard power circuit is failing. Common on launch "Fat" models (YLOD precursor).
Step-by-Step Fix
Unplug everything (Power, HDMI, USB). Hold power button 15s (discharge).
Plug in *only* power. Turn on via front button. Does it stay off? Good.
Re-add HDMI. Disable HDMI Device Link on PS3.
Pair one controller. Disable "Turn On via Network".
Test. If it auto-boots again with controller paired -> Controller fault. If solo -> PSU/CEC.
