PSP Firmware: What It Is & How to Manage

PSP Firmware = the console's operating system (stored on internal NAND). It controls:

  • Boot process, XMB (menu), system settings.
  • Game/UMD/PSN launch, save management.
  • Network stack (Wi-Fi, browser, RSS, Remote Play).
  • Media codecs (MP4, AVC, ATRAC3, UMD Video).
  • Security: signed code enforcement, DRM.

Versions & Significance

  • 1.00–3.52: Early; exploitable for CFW (custom firmware).
  • 3.52–6.60: Cat-and-mouse; each update patched exploits.
  • 6.61 (Final Official): Released 2014. Base for modern CFW (PRO-C2, ME-2.3, Infinity).

How to Update

  1. Official: Settings → System Update → "Update via Internet" / "Update via Storage Media" (PSP/GAME/UPDATE/EBOOT.PBP).
  2. CFW Install (6.61): Run PRO-C2 FastRecovery (temporary) or Infinity (permanent, 1000/2000/3000 only).

Why It Matters

  • Game compatibility: Newer games require newer firmware (e.g., 6.20+).
  • PSN Access: Requires latest OFW (6.61) + PSN sign-in (via PSNabler plugin on CFW).
  • Homebrew/Plugins: Only on CFW.

Always backup NAND before flashing.
