Playing PlayStation Games on PC from CSO Files: Complete Guide

CSO Files Cannot Run Directly

CSO = Compressed ISO. You must decompress to ISO first, then use a PlayStation emulator.

Supported PlayStation Systems & Emulators

SystemBest EmulatorPlatformsBIOS Required?
PS1 (PSX)DuckStation, Beetle PSX (RetroArch), MednafenWin/Mac/Linux/AndroidYes (SCPH1001/5501/7001.bin)
PS2PCSX2 (1.7+), AetherSX2 (Android)Win/Mac/Linux/AndroidYes (PS2 BIOS dump)
PSPPPSSPPWin/Mac/Linux/Android/iOSNo (HLE built-in)
PS3RPCS3Win/Linux/macOSYes (PS3 firmware .pup)

Step-by-Step: CSO → Playable

1. Decompress CSO to ISO

  • Windows: 7-Zip (right-click → Extract) or cso2iso CLI.
  • Linux/macOS: ciso 0 game.cso game.iso (install ciso package).
  • Android: CSO2ISO app.
  • Verify: ISO size should be 600MB–1.8GB (PS1), 1–4GB (PS2), 300MB–1.8GB (PSP).

2. Obtain BIOS (PS1/PS2/PS3 Only)

  • Legal: Dump from your own console.
  • PS1: SCPH1001.BIN (US), SCPH5501.BIN (EU), SCPH7001.BIN (JP).
  • PS2: Use PCSX2 BIOS dumper on modded PS2.
  • PS3: Extract from official firmware .pup using PS3 tools.
  • Never download BIOS — copyrighted, legal risk, often corrupted.

3. Configure Emulator

  • DuckStation (PS1): Fast, accurate, Vulkan, PGXP (wobble fix), PGXP memory, cheat support.
  • PCSX2 (PS2): Vulkan renderer, MTVU speedhack, widescreen patches, automatic game fixes.
  • PPSSPP (PSP): 10x resolution, texture replacement, post-shaders, multiplayer via Pro Adhoc.
  • RPCS3 (PS3): Requires strong CPU (TSX/AVX2), Vulkan, strict game-specific configs.

4. Load & Play

  1. File → Boot Game / Load ISO.
  2. Configure controls (keyboard, XInput, DualSense, DualShock 4).
  3. Apply game-specific patches (widescreen, 60fps, fixes).
  4. Save states (F1–F10) + in-game saves.

Legal Compliance

  • Own the game: Rip from your discs (PS1/PS2: ImgBurn; PS3: IRISMAN on CFW; PSP: USB ISO tool on CFW).
  • Digital Purchases: PS1/PS2 Classics on PS3/Vita → transfer; PS Store downloads.
  • No Piracy: Downloading ISOs/CSOs you don't own = copyright infringement.

Performance Tips

  • SSD storage for ISOs + shader cache.
  • Vulkan backend preferred (lower CPU overhead).
  • Disable vsync in emulator; use display VRR/FreeSync/G-Sync.
  • PS2: MTVU speedhack + EE cyclerate -1 / VU cycle stealing 1.
  • PS3: TSX-enabled CPU (Intel 10th gen+ / Ryzen 3000+) dramatically improves compatibility.
