Connect PS4/PS5 Controller to PSP? Not Possible (Alternatives)

You cannot pair a DualShock 4, DualSense, or any Bluetooth controller directly to a PSP (1000/2000/3000/Go/E1000).

Technical Barriers

  • Bluetooth Stack: PSP uses Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR (proprietary Sony stack) for headsets only (A2DP/HFP). No HID (Human Interface Device) profile support.
  • PS4/5 Controllers: Use Bluetooth 4.0+ (LE) + HID. Incompatible protocols.
  • PSP Go (Bluetooth 2.0): Still no HID profile – only for headset audio.

Workarounds (With Caveats)

1. PC/Mac + PSP Emulator (Best Experience)

  • PPSSPP (Windows/macOS/Linux/Android) – Map DualShock 4/5 / Xbox / Switch Pro / Keyboard perfectly
  • Upscale to 4K, texture packs, save states, cheats, fast-forward
  • Legal if you dump your own UMDs/ISOs

2. PSP Go + Bluetooth Keyboard (Partial)

  • PSP Go can pair Bluetooth keyboards (HID profile for KB only)
  • Some games accept keyboard input (homebrew, emulators). Not system-wide or commercial games.

3. Hardware Adapter (Theoretical / DIY)

  • Arduino/RPi Pico + Bluetooth Host Shield → Translate HID → PSP Serial (KIR) / GPIO → Custom firmware plugin
  • Projects: PSPBlue, PSPControllerBridge – experimental, requires CFW, soldering

4. Native PSP Controllers Only

  • PSP 1000/2000/3000: Built-in controls only
  • PSP Go: Built-in + Bluetooth headset/keyboard
  • PS TV (Vita TV): Uses DualShock 3/4 natively – plays Vita/PSP/PS1 games on TV with DS4. Best "PSP on TV with modern controller" option.

Recommendation

  1. Play on PC via PPSSPP + DualSense. Superior in every way.
  2. Want original hardware on TV? Buy a PlayStation TV (Vita TV) ~$80–$120 used. Plays PSP carts/PSN downloads + DS3/DS4.
  3. Must use real PSP? Accept built-in controls. They're good.
