Codebreaker Devices (Game Genie, GameShark): Compatible Consoles & Modern Limitations

"Codebreaker" usually refers to physical cheat cartridges like Game Genie (Galob) or GameShark (Interact/Mad Catz).

Classic Console Support (Cartridge-Based)

  • NES (Game Genie)
  • Super NES (Game Genie, GameShark)
  • Sega Genesis / Mega Drive (Game Genie, GameShark, Pro Action Replay)
  • Game Boy / Game Boy Color (Game Genie, GameShark)
  • Game Boy Advance (GameShark SP, Action Replay)
  • Nintendo 64 (GameShark Pro, Action Replay)
  • PlayStation (PS1) (GameShark, Action Replay, Xploder)—plugs into memory card port / parallel port.

Disc-Based Consoles (PS2, GameCube, Xbox, Wii)

  • PS2: Disc-based cheat discs (Action Replay Max, GameShark 2, CodeBreaker) boot first, then swap. Limited by DNAS/online checks.
  • GameCube: Action Replay (disc + memory card), SD Media Launcher (homebrew).
  • Xbox: Softmod required; no commercial cart.
  • Wii: Gecko OS, USB Loader GX (homebrew) for cheat codes (.gct).

Modern Consoles (PS3/4/5, Xbox 360/One/Series, Switch)

No physical cheat devices exist. Hypervisors, encrypted RAM, signed code, and kernel anti-cheat prevent hardware injection. Software mods (CFW, homebrew) are the only route—high ban risk online.

PC

Trainers (WeMod, Cheat Happens), Cheat Engine, console commands—ubiquitous for single-player.
