Can Video Games Cause Blindness? Debunking the Myth

No scientific evidence links video game play to permanent blindness. There is no "minimum time" threshold—because the causal relationship does not exist.

What Actually Happens: Eye Strain (Asthenopia)

  • Temporary symptoms: dry eyes, blurred vision, headaches, light sensitivity, neck/shoulder pain.
  • Causes: reduced blink rate, fixed focal distance, screen glare, poor lighting, improper viewing distance.
  • Fully reversible with rest.

Risk Factors (Not the Games Themselves)

  • Pre-existing conditions (myopia, astigmatism, dry eye syndrome).
  • Environment: dark room, bright screen, close proximity.
  • Duration without breaks.

Healthy Gaming Habits (20-20-20 Rule)

  1. Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
  2. Blink consciously; use artificial tears if needed.
  3. Monitor at arm's length, top of screen at/below eye level.
  4. Ambient lighting: avoid glare, don't play in total darkness.
  5. Annual comprehensive eye exams.

If you experience persistent vision changes, pain, or floaters—see an ophthalmologist immediately. These are not caused by gaming but may be uncovered during long sessions.
