What Was the First Video Game System? The Brown Box & Magnavox Odyssey

The earliest known video game system is the "Brown Box" prototype (1967–1968), developed by Ralph Baer and his team at Sanders Associates. It later became the commercial Magnavox Odyssey (1972).

Earlier Precursors

  • 1958: "Tennis for Two" – William Higinbotham's oscilloscope demo at Brookhaven National Lab. Not a consumer system.
  • 1962: "Spacewar!" – PDP-1 mainframe game; not a dedicated console.

Why the Brown Box / Odyssey Matters

  • First home console with interchangeable game cards.
  • Used TV as display (RF modulator).
  • Introduced paddle controllers and light gun.
  • Direct ancestor of all home consoles.

So: Brown Box (prototype) → Magnavox Odyssey (first commercial console, 1972).
