Are European Video Games in English? Localization Reality

Most, but not all. English is the lingua franca of game development, but Europe's linguistic diversity means language support varies.

The General Rule

  • AAA / Major Releases (Ubisoft, EA, Activision, Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, Square Enix, Capcom, Bandai Namco, etc.): **Always include English** (Text + often Voice) + FIGS (French, Italian, German, Spanish) + often Polish, Russian, Portuguese (BR/PT), Dutch, Japanese, Korean, Simp/Trad Chinese.
  • Indie / Mid-Sized (Devolver, Focus, Paradox, Team17, etc.): **Almost always English text.** Voice often English-only. FIGS + others common but not guaranteed.
  • European-Developed Games: Often developed *in* English first (Sweden, Poland, UK, Germany, France, Finland, Ukraine studios). English is native or primary dev language.

Exceptions (Games NOT in English)

  • Hyper-Local / Budget Titles: Mobile/PC games targeting only Germany, France, Poland, Russia, Turkey, etc. May lack English.
  • Visual Novels / Text-Heavy Indies: Japanese/Chinese/Korean/Russian originals without localization budget.
  • Older Games (Pre-2000s): Often single-language (German, French, Spanish, Italian, Polish) or poor fan translations.
  • Nintendo 1st Party (Historical): Some older EU Wii/DS/3DS carts were multi-language (MULTI5/6) but you had to select language at boot. Modern Switch carts are region-free, all languages on cart.

How to Verify Before Buying

  1. Steam / PS Store / Xbox Store / eShop Page: "Languages" section lists Interface / Full Audio / Subtitles.
  2. Back of Physical Box: Flags / Text: "Langues: Anglais, Français, Allemand..." / "Sprachen: Englisch, Deutsch..."
  3. PCGamingWiki / MobyGames: Detailed language tables.

Summary: If buying a modern major release in Europe, English is 99% guaranteed. For niche/indie/older titles, check the store page.
