The First Handheld Video Game Console: Nintendo Game & Watch (1980)

The first commercially successful handheld video game system was the Nintendo Game & Watch, invented by Gunpei Yokoi of Nintendo R&D1. It launched a lineage that leads directly to the Game Boy, DS, 3DS, and Switch.

First Release: Ball (Silver, Wide Screen Series)

  • Date: April 28, 1980 (Japan)
  • Gameplay: Move left/right to catch falling balls. Miss three → Game Over.
  • Display: Segmented LCD (pre-dot-matrix), single color.
  • Power: 2× LR44 / SR44 button cells (~1 year battery life).

Why It Matters

  • D-Pad Invention: Yokoi created the cross-shaped D-pad for the Donkey Kong Game & Watch (1982)—now universal on every controller.
  • Design Philosophy: "Lateral Thinking with Withered Technology"—using cheap, mature parts (LCD, calculator chips) to make affordable, reliable, mass-market devices.
  • Lineage: Game & Watch → Game Boy (1989) → DS → 3DS → Switch. Yokoi mentored Satoru Okada (Game Boy hardware) and influenced Satoru Iwata.

Predecessors (Not Commercial Successes)

  • Mattel Auto Race (1976) — LED, single game, $24.99. First handheld electronic game.
  • Milton Bradley Microvision (1979) — Cartridge-based, 16×16 LCD, 12 games. Failed (fragile, expensive).
  • Epoch Game Pocket Computer (1984) — Japan only, 75×64 LCD, 5 games.
