Stop Unwanted Game Pop-Ups: Adware, Malware & Legit Game Fixes

"Pop-up video games" usually means one of three things. Match your situation:

1. Fake Game Ads / Scam Pop-Ups (Most Likely)

Symptoms: "Play Now!" buttons, fake "You Won!" screens, redirects to app stores.

  • Fix: Install uBlock Origin (Firefox/Chrome/Edge) + Malwarebytes Free scan.
  • Prevent: Never download "game launchers" from ads. Only use Steam, Epic, GOG, Microsoft Store, official sites.

2. Unwanted Pre-installed / Bundled Games

Symptoms: Games you didn't install appear in Start Menu, launch at boot, show notifications.

  • Windows: Settings → Apps → Installed Apps → Sort by Date → Uninstall unknowns.
  • Browser Extensions: Remove unused extensions (Extensions → Manage).
  • Startup: Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) → Startup tab → Disable game launchers.

3. Legit Games You Installed But Want to Silence

  • In-Game Settings: Disable "News Pop-ups," "Event Notifications," "Auto-Update Prompts."
  • Steam: Library → Right-click → Properties → General → Uncheck "Notify me about updates."
  • Windows Focus Assist: Settings → System → Focus Assist → "Priority only" or "Alarms only" while gaming.

4. Mobile (Android/iOS)

  • Long-press app → App Info → Notifications → Turn off "Game suggestions," "Promotions."
  • Settings → Apps → Special Access → "Display over other apps" → Revoke for shady apps.
  • Install DNS66 (Android) or use NextDNS / AdGuard DNS system-wide.

If Nothing Works

Run Malwarebytes + HitmanPro (free second-opinion scanner). Check Task Scheduler for rogue tasks. Reinstall browser profile.

Describe your exact pop-up (screenshot helps) for a targeted fix.
