Why Are Video Games Being Banned in Australia?

Video games are not broadly banned in Australia. The country operates a mandatory classification system (administered by the Australian Classification Board) that rates games by content. Titles refused classification (RC) cannot be sold, hired, or advertised—effectively a commercial ban—but this applies to a tiny fraction of releases.

Common Reasons for Refused Classification

  • Excessive violence: Gratuitous, realistic gore; sexual violence; violence against vulnerable people.
  • Sexual content: Explicit sexual activity, nudity tied to rewards, or themes offensive to general standards.
  • Drug use: Detailed instruction, encouragement, or glorification of proscribed substances.
  • Crime instruction: Detailed guidance on committing serious crimes.
  • Extreme language: Prolific, aggressive use of highly offensive terms without mitigating context.

Recent High-Profile Cases

  • Hotline Miami 2 (initially RC, later passed with cuts).
  • Outlast 2 (RC, later passed R18+ after appeal).
  • Disco Elysium: The Final Cut (initially RC for drug depiction, later passed R18+).

Most Games Release Normally

The vast majority receive ratings (G, PG, M, MA15+, R18+) and sell freely. Always verify a specific title’s status on the Classification Board’s public database before importing.
