Can You "Burn" a Video Game to Your Computer? No – You Install or Copy

"Burning" means writing to optical disc (CD/DVD/BD). You don't burn games to a computer—you install or copy them.

How Games Get Onto a PC

  • Digital Stores: Steam, Epic, GOG, Xbox App, Battle.net – download + install (license tied to account).
  • Physical Disc: Insert DVD/BD → run setup.exe / autorun → installs to HDD/SSD. Disc may be required for DRM check.
  • DRM-Free Installers: GOG, itch.io – download .exe/.bin, run once, game folder portable.
  • Emulation: Rip your own cart/disc → ISO/ROM → run in emulator (legal if you own original).

Copying Installed Games

You can copy the installed folder to another drive/PC for backup or portable play (if DRM-free). Steam: "Backup Game Files" feature.

Legal Warning

  • Downloading ISOs/ROMs you don't own = piracy.
  • Cracking DRM (Denuvo, SteamAPI) = illegal in many jurisdictions (DMCA 1201, EUCD).

Buy → Download/Install → Play. No burning needed.
