How to Make a Gameplay Video for an Unreleased Game? You Can't—But Here's What You Can Do

You cannot record actual gameplay of a game that hasn't been released. The executable code, assets, and servers do not exist publicly.

What You *Can* Create Instead

  • Concept / Pitch Video: Use Unreal Engine 5 / Unity / Blender to build a "vertical slice" prototype showing your core mechanic, art style, and loop. Great for Kickstarter / publisher pitches.
  • Trailer / Teaser: Edit together concept art, storyboards, 3D animatics, motion graphics, and music. No gameplay engine required.
  • Devlog / Behind-the-Scenes: Record your development process (coding, level design, art timelapses). Builds community early.
  • Analysis / Speculation Video: If you're a content creator, analyze trailers, screenshots, and developer interviews to predict mechanics.

If You Have Press/Dev Access

You likely signed an **NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement)**. Recording/capturing is strictly controlled. Follow the embargo date and capture guidelines provided by the PR/Devrel contact.

Tools for Pre-Release Content Creation

  • OBS Studio (recording), DaVinci Resolve (editing), Blender (3D animatics), Adobe After Effects (motion graphics), Unreal Engine 5 / Unity (real-time prototypes).
