Monsters vs. Aliens Video Game Review

Released alongside the 2009 DreamWorks film, Monsters vs. Aliens is a competent but unremarkable movie tie-in. Metacritic: 62/100 (Mixed/Average).

Strengths

  • Visual fidelity: Faithfully replicates the movie's vibrant, stylized art direction.
  • Gameplay variety: Platforming, combat, puzzle-solving, and turret sequences across playable characters (Susan, B.O.B., Missing Link, Dr. Cockroach).
  • Local co-op: Two-player mode adds replay value for families.
  • Accessible: Low difficulty, forgiving checkpoints—suitable for young players.

Weaknesses

  • Repetitive loops: Combat encounters and platforming challenges recycle quickly.
  • Simple puzzles: Rarely taxing for experienced gamers.
  • Short campaign: 4–6 hours for a single playthrough.
  • Technical issues: Reported frame drops, collision glitches, audio desync on some platforms.

Verdict

A decent rental for kids who loved the movie. Not a standout action-platformer. If you want a great licensed game from that era, play Batman: Arkham Asylum or X-Men Origins: Wolverine instead.
