Was Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Free? (Service Discontinued 2014)

No, Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection (WFC) was a free service. Correction: It was free for users. Nintendo bore the server costs. No subscription fee existed.

Key Facts

• Launched: 2005 (DS), 2006 (Wii).
• Discontinued: May 20, 2014 (GameSpy shutdown). All DS/Wii online play stopped.
• Scope: Matchmaking, leaderboards, friend codes, DLC delivery (e.g., Mario Kart Wii tournaments).

Current Nintendo Online

• Nintendo Switch Online (Paid): $3.99/mo or $19.99/yr. Required for most Switch online play. Includes NES/SNES/N64/GB/GBA libraries, cloud saves.
• Free-to-Play Exceptions: Fortnite, Apex Legends, Rocket League, Fall Guys, Pokémon UNITE work without NSO subscription.

WFC is gone forever. For DS/WiFi play today, only homebrew (Wiimmfi, AltWFC) restores limited functionality for supported games.
