How to Name Your Dog in Nintendogs: Complete Guide for DS & 3DS

Unlike real dogs, your Nintendogs companion doesn't learn its name through repetition. Instead, the name is permanently set during the adoption process via text entry and voice recording. Here's everything you need to know for both the original DS release and the 3DS sequel.

Naming Your Dog in the Original Nintendogs (DS)

  1. Start the game and select "Go for a Walk" or enter a contest, then choose "Adopt a Dog" at the Kennel.
  2. Pick your preferred breed.
  3. Naming Screen: Use the touchscreen keyboard to type a name (maximum 10 characters).
  4. Confirm the name. The game will prompt you to speak the name into the microphone 3–4 times clearly.
  5. The voice recognition system saves your audio pattern. Your dog will only respond to your voice saying that exact name.

Nintendogs + Cats (3DS)

  1. Visit the Pet Shop and begin the adoption process.
  2. Type the name, then record the voice command (three times).
  3. Afterward, you can call your pet's name via the microphone anytime to get its attention.

Pro Tips for Reliable Voice Recognition

  • Record in a quiet room. Speak naturally and maintain a consistent pitch across all recordings.
  • Re-record anytime: Go to Home → Dog Profile → "Call Name" or "Rename" to update the voice sample.
  • Your dog responds to tone and pattern, not linguistic understanding. Nicknames won't work unless you record them separately.
