Nintendo DS Button Layout: Where Is the 'Select' Button?

The Nintendo DS does not have a dedicated "Select" button.

Button Layout

  • D-Pad (Left) — Movement / Menu navigation.
  • A / B / X / Y (Right) — Primary actions (confirm, cancel, attack, jump).
  • L / R (Shoulders) — Secondary actions, camera, triggers.
  • Start (Lower center) — Pause, main menu, confirm in some menus.
  • Power (Top edge) — On/Off / Sleep.
  • Touch Screen (Bottom) — Stylus/finger input.
  • Microphone (Center hinge) — Voice input.

Where "Select" Functions Go

  • Start often doubles as Select (pause → menu → select).
  • A / B / X / Y context-sensitive (e.g., "Select" = A).
  • Touch Screen — tap the on-screen "Select" button.
  • D-Pad + A — navigate highlight → confirm.

Each game maps "Select" differently. Check the in-game controls screen (usually Options → Controls).
