Saving GBA Games on Nintendo DS: Cartridge Saves Stay on Cart

You cannot save a GBA cartridge's save data to the DS's internal memory or SD card directly. GBA carts have their own save hardware (SRAM, Flash, EEPROM) inside the cartridge. The DS slot-2 (GBA slot) reads/writes that cartridge memory only.

Why It's Separate

  • DS system memory (slot-1) is architecturally separate from GBA slot.
  • No software pathway exists to copy GBA cart save → DS NAND/SD.
  • Nintendo never provided a transfer tool.

What Actually Works

Key Takeaway

Original cart saves stay on the cart. Emulators save to SD. They don't mix. If you want unified saves, play via emulator on a hacked 3DS and dump your cart saves once.
