Can DS Lite and DSi Play Multiplayer Together? Not Directly—But Wiimmfi Works

No commercial game supports direct local wireless multiplayer between a DS Lite and a DSi. Despite both using the same DS Wireless Communications (802.11b) protocol, games check hardware ID at lobby creation and treat them as incompatible.

Why They Don't Connect

  • Games verify hardware model at lobby creation; DS Lite ≠ DSi.
  • DSi has cameras, SD slot, and faster CPU—games aren't coded to sync across models.

What Does Work

  • DS Lite ↔ DS Lite (local wireless / Nintendo WFC*).
  • DSi ↔ DSi (local wireless / Nintendo WFC*).
  • DSi ↔ 3DS (DS mode) — same as DSi↔DSi.
  • Online via Wiimmfi (homebrew): Both can connect to fan servers independently and meet in the same lobby (e.g., Mario Kart DS, Pokémon Gen IV/V).

Single-System Multiplayer

Some games (e.g., New Super Mario Bros., Mario Kart DS single-card download play) allow 2 players on one DS/DSi—but not across two systems of different models.

*Nintendo WFC shut down 2014; Wiimmfi replaces it.
