How to Put Music on Nintendo DSi Without an SD Card

Music on Nintendo DSi Without SD Card

You cannot. The Nintendo DSi has no accessible internal storage for music and requires an SD card to use the DSi Sound application.

Why It's Impossible

  • Internal NAND (256 MB) stores only system firmware, DSiWare, saves, and photos. Not user-accessible for audio.
  • DSi Sound App reads only from SD card (/music/ or root).
  • No USB Mass Storage Mode – connecting via USB charges only; no file transfer.

What You Need

  1. SD Card (SDSC ≤ 2 GB) or SDHC (4–32 GB, firmware 1.4+).
  2. PC/Card Reader to copy files.
  3. Format: FAT32 (DSi does not support exFAT/NTFS).
  4. Audio Format: AAC (.m4a/.mp4/.3gp) only. MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG will not play.

Step-by-Step

  1. Convert MP3s to AAC: iTunes/Music.app → File → Convert → Create AAC Version; or fre:ac (free, batch).
  2. Create music folder on SD card root.
  3. Copy .m4a files there.
  4. Insert SD into DSi → Launch DSi Sound → Enjoy.

Cheap SD Card Options (2024)

  • SanDisk 2 GB SD – $3–$5
  • SanDisk 8/16/32 GB SDHC – $5–$10
  • Any Class 4 or higher works; speed irrelevant for audio.

Alternative: If you only want to listen, use a phone/MP3 player. The DSi Sound app is basic (no playlists, shuffle only via L/R, no background play).
