Nintendo DS Games on 3DS XL: Compatibility Guide

The Nintendo 3DS XL is fully backward compatible with the vast majority of Nintendo DS game cartridges. You can simply insert a DS game card into the 3DS XL's slot and play immediately. The system emulates the DS hardware, rendering games at their original resolution on the larger screens (with optional scaling).

Important Exceptions

  • DSi-Enhanced Games Requiring Camera: A small number of DSi-specific titles (like Face Training or certain Pokémon features) rely on the DSi's built-in cameras. These functions will not work on a standard 3DS XL, though the core game may still be playable.
  • DSiWare Titles: Digital games purchased on the Nintendo DSi Shop are not transferable or playable on the 3DS family. They remain locked to the original DSi hardware.
  • Region Locking: While Nintendo DS cartridges are largely region-free, the 3DS XL itself is region-locked. A North American 3DS XL will not play Japanese or European DS games that have region-specific coding (rare, but exists for some titles like Pokémon Black/White enhanced features).
  • GBA Slot Accessories: Games requiring the Game Boy Advance cartridge slot (e.g., Guitar Hero: On Tour grip, Pokémon Pal Park migration from GBA carts) cannot be used because the 3DS XL lacks a GBA slot.

Bottom Line

For 99% of the DS library—including heavy hitters like Mario Kart DS, Pokémon HeartGold/SoulSilver, The World Ends with You, and Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow—the 3DS XL is an excellent way to play. You even get the benefit of save-state suspension via the Home menu and sleep mode.
