Why You Can't Play Custom Forge Maps Online in Halo: Reach Matchmaking

Short answer: Bungie deliberately restricted custom Forge content to Custom Games (private lobbies) only. There is no matchmaking hopper, no public browser, and no workaround to queue into a random lobby with a custom map variant in Halo: Reach.

How Forge Works in Reach

  • Forge World & other maps: Edit objects, spawn points, and gametypes in real time.
  • Save as Map Variant + Gametype Variant: Your creation is stored as two separate files.
  • Share via File Share: Upload to Bungie.net (legacy) or in-game File Share; friends download the variants.
  • Playable ONLY in Custom Games: The host selects the map and gametype variants, invites the party, and launches. Everyone must have the files locally.

Why No Matchmaking for Customs?

  • Balance: Asymmetric or exploitable maps would break competitive integrity.
  • Technical: Peer-to-peer host migration combined with dynamic map synchronization caused frequent desyncs.
  • Moderation: Curating 10+ million user-created maps was impossible with the tools and staff available at launch.

Games That Do Support Online Custom Maps

  • Halo 3: Forge maps rotated into Social Slayer and Custom Games hoppers.
  • Halo 4: "Community Maps" playlist (curated by 343 Industries).
  • Halo 5: Forge (PC/Xbox): Full browser, dedicated servers, featured maps in matchmaking.
  • Halo Infinite (Forge Beta): Cross-play, scripting, growing playlist support.
  • Far Cry 5/6, Trials Rising, Trackmania: Robust online map browsers with community ratings.

How to Play Reach Customs Today

  1. Add friends who already have the map/gametype files (or share them via File Share).
  2. Start a Custom Game lobby.
  3. Host selects the map variant and gametype variant.
  4. Invite the party and play.

Bottom line: No public-online workaround exists for Reach. If you want matchmaking with community maps, move to Halo 5 or Halo Infinite.
