Playing Non-3D Games on Nintendo 3DS

Native 2D games don't run on 3DS hardware — but you have options:

What Works

• DS/DSi games: Full backward compatibility. Play in 2D on 3DS screens (black bars or stretched).
• Virtual Console (eShop, closed 2023): NES, GB, GBC, GBA, N64, etc. — purchased titles still downloadable if owned.
• Homebrew (CFW): Emulators for NES, SNES, Genesis, GBA, etc. via RetroArch, standalone cores.

Why Native 2D Fails

• 3DS GPU (PICA200) designed for stereoscopic 3D — no 2D blitter.
• OS expects 3D framebuffer; 2D titles would need full port.
• No SDK support for "2D mode" — developers target 3D pipeline.

Best Path Today

1. Install custom firmware (Luma3DS) — safe, reversible.
2. Use RetroArch with appropriate cores.
3. Or: play DS/3DS games natively, use Switch/PC for 2D classics.

3DS is a 3D handheld. For pure 2D, GBA SP, DS Lite, or modern ports are better.
