Free Online Games on Nintendo DSi vs. Wii

The DSi cannot download or play free online games in the background like the Wii did with WiiConnect24. The DSi's online capabilities were far more limited.

What WiiConnect24 Did (Wii Only)

• Standby mode (orange light) kept Wi-Fi active.
• Downloaded messages, Miis, News/Weather Channel data, game updates, and WiiWare/VC demos automatically.
• Shut down June 28, 2013 (all Wii online services ended 2014).

What the DSi Could Do Online

• Nintendo DSi Shop: Purchase DSiWare (paid). Closed March 31, 2017.
• DSi Browser (Opera): Basic web browsing. Could play Flash/Java browser games on mobile sites — extremely slow, most didn't work.
• PictoChat (Local Only): Ad-hoc wireless chat/drawing with nearby DSi/DS. No internet.
• System Transfer / Firmware Updates: Only official Nintendo connections.

Why You Might Remember "Free Games"

• DSiWare Free Promos: Nintendo occasionally offered free DSiWare titles for limited times (e.g., Mario Clock, Birds & Beans, Paper Plane). You downloaded them manually from the Shop Channel.
• Flashcart (R4, Acekard, etc.): If you used a flashcart, you could run homebrew NDS games/apps from microSD — not official, not online.
• Wii Memory: You may be conflating WiiConnect24 (Wii) with DSi. They were separate systems.

Current State (2024)

• DSi Shop: Gone. No new downloads.
• Browser: Useless. Modern TLS/HTML5 unsupported.
• Online Play (WFC): Gone. Mario Kart DS, Pokémon Gen 4/5, etc. no longer connect officially.
• Community Revival: Wiimmfi (custom DNS) restores online for DS/Wii games. Pretendo for 3DS/Wii U. Requires CFW or DNS change.

For free games on DSi today: Install TWiLight Menu++ (via CFW) → load homebrew/NDS ROMs from SD. No official online free-game service exists.
