Trading a Game to GameStop Without a Receipt: Not Allowed

GameStop requires a receipt for all trade-ins. No receipt = no trade. Here's why, and what to do if you lost yours.

Why the Receipt Rule Exists

  • Proof of Purchase: Prevents stolen goods from entering inventory.
  • Determines Trade-In Value: Base value varies by purchase date, edition, condition. Receipt locks in the correct SKU.
  • Inventory Tracking: Serializes the transaction for audit/loss prevention.

If You Lost the Receipt

  • Contact GameStop Support: They may look up the purchase via your PowerUp Rewards account, email, or phone number if you bought it there.
  • Ask Original Retailer: If bought at Best Buy, Target, Walmart, etc.—request a duplicate receipt (often possible with card lookup).
  • Sell Privately: eBay, Facebook Marketplace, Mercari, r/GameSale — you'll likely get more cash than GameStop's trade value anyway.

Keep receipts for electronics and games. Digital receipts (email/app) count.
