Helping a Partner Reduce Excessive Gaming: Empathy, Boundaries & Professional Resources

40 hrs/week in EverQuest II suggests problematic use (not necessarily addiction). Approach with empathy, not ultimatums.

1. Understand the Function

  • Escape? Stress, anxiety, depression, job dissatisfaction.
  • Social? Guild bonds, voice chat, sense of belonging.
  • Achievement? Progression, mastery, status missing offline.
  • Habit/Dopamine Loop? Compulsive checking, withdrawal irritability.

2. Communicate (Non‑Violent Communication)

  • "I feel lonely when we don't spend evenings together." (Not "You always play.")
  • "I'm worried about your sleep/health." (Specific observations.)
  • Ask: "What do you get from EQ2 that you value?"

3. Co‑Create Boundaries

  • Scheduled "Off" Time: e.g., Mon/Wed/Fri 7–10 PM = us time (no screens).
  • Gaming Window: e.g., Tue/Thu/Sat 2 hrs max; Sun off.
  • Transition Ritual: 15‑min warning → save/logout → shared activity (walk, cook, show).
  • Bedtime Rule: No screens 1 hr before sleep.

4. Replace, Don't Just Remove

  • Find shared hobbies: board games, hiking, cooking class, learning language.
  • Support his non‑gaming interests (even if solo).
  • Encourage real‑world mastery (fitness, skill, project) — same dopamine loop.

5. Professional Help If Needed

  • Therapist (CBT, addiction specialty) — individual or couples.
  • Support Groups: OLG‑Anon (for families), CGAA (gamers).
  • Resources: Reset: Gaming Addiction (Dr. K), Game Quitters (Cam Adair).

Red Flags for Professional Intervention

  • Job loss, academic failure, hygiene neglect, financial harm, aggression when interrupted, complete social withdrawal.

You can't control him. You can change the dynamic. Start with curiosity, not criticism.
