PlayStation Store on PS3: Free vs. Paid Downloads Explained

"Downloading PS3" is ambiguous. Here's the breakdown:

• PS3 Games: Most are paid. Prices set by publisher ($0.99–$59.99).
• Free-to-Play Games: DC Universe Online, Planetside 2, Dust 514 (shut down), Free Realms (shut down) — free download, optional microtransactions.
• PS Plus Monthly Games: Free while subscribed (not permanently owned).
• Demos / Trials: Free, time- or content-limited.
• System Software Updates: Always free (Settings → System Update).
• Themes / Avatars / Videos: Mix of free and paid.

How to Find Free Games

1. Open PlayStation Store on PS3.
2. Navigate to Games → Free to Play or sort by Price: Low to High.
3. Check PlayStation Plus section for current monthly games (requires active sub).

Note: PS3 Store purchase functionality remains active (unlike PSP/Vita web store closure), but many titles are delisted.
