Playing PS3 Games Without the Disc: Digital Copies vs. Disc-Based Installs

You can play without the disc only if you own the digital version from the PlayStation Store.

Disc-Based Games

• Insert disc → console caches ~1–5 GB to HDD for faster loading.
• Disc must remain in drive to launch (license check).
• Cannot play if disc removed, even with data installed.

Digital Games (PS Store)

• Full game downloads to HDD.
• No disc needed—ever.
• License tied to PSN account; playable on primary PS3 (or activated secondary).

Key Requirements

• PSN Account.
• Internet (for download, updates, license refresh).
• PS Plus for online multiplayer (free-to-play games excluded).

If you delete a digital game, redownload from "Download List" on the PS Store.
