How to Connect a PSP to the Internet Using a 3G Dongle

You cannot directly connect a PSP to the internet using a 3G dongle. The PlayStation Portable only supports Wi-Fi for internet connectivity and lacks built-in support for cellular data.

Why Direct Connection Isn't Possible

The PSP's hardware only includes a Wi-Fi (802.11b) radio. It has no USB host capabilities to communicate with a 3G dongle, nor does its operating system contain the drivers needed to initialize and manage a cellular modem.

Working Alternatives

1. Wi-Fi Hotspot (Recommended)

Create a Wi-Fi network that your PSP can join:

  • Smartphone Hotspot: Enable "Personal Hotspot" (iOS) or "Mobile Hotspot" (Android) on a phone with an active data plan.
  • Portable MiFi Device: Dedicated mobile routers (like those from Netgear, Huawei, or Verizon Jetpack) convert 3G/4G/LTE signals into Wi-Fi.
  • Home/ Public Wi-Fi: Connect to your home router or public hotspots at cafés, libraries, etc.

2. Portable Travel Router with 3G Dongle Support

Some compact travel routers (e.g., older models from TP-Link, ASUS, or HooToo) feature a USB port specifically designed to accept certain 3G/4G USB modems. The router handles the dial-up connection and broadcasts Wi-Fi for the PSP.

  • Check the router's compatibility list before purchasing— not all dongles work with all routers.
  • Configure the router's APN settings for your carrier.

Important Considerations

  • Data Usage: PSP downloads (game updates, DLC, browser) can consume significant data. Monitor your plan's limits.
  • Connection Stability: 3G speeds (typically 0.5–2 Mbps) may result in slow downloads and high latency for online play.
  • PSP Browser Limitations: The built-in NetFront browser is outdated; many modern websites will not load correctly.
