Downloading Many Demos on PS3: Pros, Cons & Storage Management

Not inherently bad, but manage storage. PS3 HDD is 2.5" SATA (up to 1.5 TB supported unofficially; 1 TB safe).

Pros

  • Try before buy (demos often differ from final).
  • Free content (some demos are substantial — MGS4, GT5 Prologue, Uncharted).
  • Preserve delisted demos (PT, Scott Pilgrim, Marvel vs Capcom 2 demo).

Cons

  • Space: Demos 500 MB – 5 GB each. 20 demos = 20–50 GB.
  • XMB Clutter: Long scroll in Game column. Use "Game Data Utility" to hide.
  • Expired Licenses: Some demos (EA, Activision) require server handshake — may stop working.

Management Tips

  1. Upgrade HDD: 1 TB WD Blue / Seagate Barracuda ~$40. Backup (Settings → System → Backup) → Swap → Restore.
  2. Delete After Trying: Keep only favorites.
  3. External Backup (CFW): webMAN MOD → copy demos to USB / NTFS HDD. Mount via multiMAN.
  4. Organize: Create folders in Game column (△ → Create New Folder) — "Demos", "PSN Games", "Disc Games".

Hidden Gem Demos Worth Keeping

  • Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (Demo) — Unique prologue.
  • Gran Turismo 5 Prologue — Full game lite (35 cars, 5 tracks).
  • Uncharted: Drake's Fortune Demo — Different section than retail.
  • LittleBigPlanet Demo — Unique levels.

Curate, don't hoard. Storage is cheap; time isn't.
