Motion Controls on PS3: Sixaxis & PlayStation Move

The PS3 lacks a unified "motion control system" like Wii or Switch. It has two distinct, incompatible technologies:

1. Sixaxis (Built into DualShock 3 / Sixaxis Controller)

  • Sensors: 3-axis accelerometer + 3-axis gyroscope (rotation rate). No pointer/camera tracking.
  • Games Supporting It: Flower, Flow, Lair (optional patch), Warhawk (tilt steering), MotorStorm (tilt steer), Heavenly Sword (aftertouch), Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (balance logs, grenade aim), Ratchet & Clank Future (wrench swing), Folklore, Heavy Rain (some QTEs).
  • Calibration: Usually automatic on game start. Hold controller flat, press PS button if prompted.
  • Limitations: No absolute position — only relative rotation/acceleration. Drift common. Not precise enough for aiming.

2. PlayStation Move (Separate Peripheral, 2010)

  • Hardware: Move Motion Controller (glowing orb tracked by PlayStation Eye camera) + optional Navigation Controller (analog stick + buttons).
  • Tracking: 3D position (X,Y,Z) + orientation. Sub-millimeter, low latency.
  • Key Games: Sports Champions (pack-in), Killzone 3, Resident Evil 5: Gold, Heavy Rain (Move patch), Tumble, The Fight: Lights Out, Time Crisis: Razing Storm, LittleBigPlanet 2 (Move levels), No Heroes Allowed!.
  • Setup: PS Eye on TV top/bottom → calibrate in XMB → pair Move (PS button).

For motion gaming on PS3, Move is the real deal. Sixaxis is a neat tilt extra. Neither works on PS4/PS5 (Move works on PS4/PS5 for PSVR / backwards compat).
