PS3 System Software Updates: Ended April 2021

Sony officially ended PlayStation 3 system software updates with Version 4.90 (April 2021). There will be no further updates — ever.

What This Means

• No New Features: No UI changes, no new codec support, no browser updates (browser is ancient WebKit, broken on modern web).
• No Security Patches: Vulnerabilities discovered after April 2021 remain unpatched. Mitigation: keep PS3 offline or on isolated VLAN.
• Game Compatibility: New physical games (none released) or digital titles requiring >4.90 won't exist. All existing games work on 4.90.
• PSN Access: Still works for: Store (purchases/redownloads), Friends, Messages, Trophies, Remote Play (to Vita/PC), Some game servers (if publisher maintains).

If You Get "System Update Required" (Error 8002A224 / E-8200000A)

• Your console is on < 4.90. Connect to internet → Settings → System Update → Update via Internet. It will pull 4.90.
• If internet fails: Download 4.90 PUP from PlayStation.com → USB:/PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP → Safe Mode → Update from Storage Media.

Warning: Fake Update Sites

Searching "PS3 update 4.91" leads to malware sites. Only download from playstation.com. Any version >4.90 is fake/modded.

CFW Users

If on Custom Firmware (HFW + HEN / CFW), do not install official 4.90 — it removes CFW. Stay on your CFW's supported version (usually 4.90 HFW + HEN Enabler). Follow hacks.guide.
