Should You Trade Your Old PS3 for a "New" PS3? No

No. "New" PS3s haven't been manufactured since 2017. Any "new" unit is old stock (risk: dead CMOS battery, dried thermal paste, YLOD) or a scalped/refurbished unit at inflated prices ($200–$400).

Why It's a Bad Deal

  • No Hardware Improvement: All PS3s (Fat → Slim → Super Slim) play the same library identically. No "Pro" model exists.
  • Backward Compatibility: Only launch Fats (CECHA/B/C/E) play PS2 discs. Those are the *oldest*, most failure‑prone units.
  • Value Proposition: A working Slim/Super Slim is worth $60–$100. Trading yours + cash for a "new" one loses equity.

Better Paths

  1. Fix Yours: YLOD? Reflow/reball ($50–$80). Dead Blu‑ray? Drive swap ($30). CMOS dead? CR2032 swap ($2).
  2. Upgrade to PS4/PS5: PS4 plays 99% of PS3 library via PS Now (streaming) or remasters. PS5 plays PS4 + select PS3 via PS Plus Premium streaming.
  3. Sell & Fund Next‑Gen: Sell working PS3 ($80) + games → Put toward PS5 / Steam Deck / Gaming PC.
  4. Keep as Retro: CFW (HEN/Rebug) → Emulators (PS1, PSP, RetroArch), homebrew, backups. Best value if you tinker.

Unless your PS3 is *physically broken beyond repair*, trading "up" to another PS3 is financially and functionally irrational.
