Cables Needed for PS3 HD Output: HDMI Best, Component Alternative

You **cannot upgrade a PS3 to 4K**. It outputs max **1080p**. To get the best HD image on a modern TV:

Best: HDMI Cable

  • PS3 supports **HDMI 1.3** (1080p/60, 1080p/24, 720p, 480p).
  • Carries digital audio (LPCM 7.1, Bitstream Dolby/DTS).
  • Any "High Speed" HDMI cable (Certified Premium recommended for 1080p/24 reliability).

Alternative: Component (YPbPr) Cable

  • PS3 **AV Multi Out** port → Component dongle (often included with early PS3s) or 3rd party cable.
  • Supports **1080i / 720p / 480p**. Not 1080p for games (most games render 720p upscaled; Blu-ray movies 1080i).
  • Analog audio (RCA L/R) separate.

Worst: Composite (Yellow/Red/White)

  • 480i only. Use only if TV lacks HDMI/Component.

Setup

  1. Connect cable.
  2. PS3: Settings → Display Settings → Video Output Settings → HDMI / Component → Auto/Manual select 1080p/720p.
  3. TV: Rename input to "Game" or enable "Game Mode" / "PC Mode" for low latency.

Note: PS3 does not support HDR, VRR, or 120Hz.
