Recommended Video Game Time for a 10‑Year‑Old

The **American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)** suggests:

  • Ages 6+: **≤ 2 hours/day** of recreational screen time (includes games, TV, social media).
  • Ages 2–5: ≤ 1 hour/day.

Context Matters More Than a Number

  • Content: Educational/creative (Minecraft, Kerbal) vs. violent/addictive loops.
  • Balance: Sleep (9–11 hrs), school, homework, physical activity (>1 hr), family meals, offline friends.
  • Self‑Regulation: Can they stop without meltdown? Transition smoothly?
  • Co‑Play: Parent joins → guidance, bonding, monitoring.

Practical Family Rules

  • No screens 1 hr before bed.
  • Games only after homework/chores.
  • Weekend flexibility (e.g., 3 hrs Sat/Sun).
  • Use console parental controls (Switch, PS, Xbox, Steam) to enforce limits.

**2 hours is a ceiling, not a target.** Some days 0 is fine. Adjust per child’s maturity, grades, and wellbeing.
