The first video game is widely considered to be Tennis for Two, created in 1958 by physicist William Higinbotham at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Displayed on an oscilloscope, it simulated a tennis match with a side-view court and a bouncing ball controlled by two players using custom controllers.
Although never commercially released, Tennis for Two was a fully playable interactive electronic game—predating later milestones like Spacewar! (1962) and Pong (1972). It demonstrated the potential of computer-based entertainment and laid conceptual groundwork for the video game industry.
