Worst-Selling Video Games: Why There's No Definitive #1

No authoritative body tracks sales for every game ever released. "Worst-selling" is undefined: units? revenue? attach rate? development cost vs. revenue? Regional vs. global?

Infamous Commercial Failures (Often Cited)

  • E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (Atari 2600, 1982): ~3.5M produced, ~1.5M sold, millions buried. Symbol of the 1983 crash.
  • Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing (PC, 2003): <1,000 copies sold (est.). Broken physics, no AI, no win condition. Metacritic 8/100.
  • Ride to Hell: Retribution (PS3/360/PC, 2013): ~3,000 units first month (US). Critical panning (16/100).
  • Shaq Fu (SNES/Genesis, 1994): High budget, terrible reception, low sell-through.
  • Stalin vs. Martians (PC, 2009): <500 copies (est.). Absurdist RTS, deliberately bad marketing.
  • The Day Before (PC, 2023): Pulled from Steam days after launch; refunds > sales.

Why "Worst" Is Misleading

  • Cult followings: Big Rigs is speedrun; Shaq Fu got a sequel (2018).
  • Digital delisting: Many low-sale games are removed, erasing data.
  • Indie/long-tail: Thousands of Steam/itch.io games sell <10 copies. Are they "worse"?

Better question: "What games failed commercially despite high expectations?" → Daikatana, Duke Nukem Forever, Anthem, Concord, The Day Before. Those stories teach more than a sales floor.
