Identify Your Nintendo 64 Model: Serial, Cart Slot, Exp Pak, Power, Labels

To identify your N64 model (NTSC-U, NTSC-J, PAL), check these physical markers:

1. Serial Number (Bottom Sticker)

  • Early (1996–1997): NUS-001 + 10-digit serial (e.g., NUS0011234567).
  • Late (1998+): NUS-001 + 12-digit serial (e.g., NUS001123456789).
  • Region code: USA (NTSC-U), JPN (NTSC-J), EUR/FRA/GER (PAL).

2. Cartridge Slot Shape

  • Early: Large rectangular opening.
  • Late: Smaller trapezoidal opening (dust cover tabs differ).

3. Expansion Pak Slot (Front Top)

  • Early: Separate door (removable cover) — jumper pak installed.
  • Late: Integrated under cartridge slot — no separate door.

4. Power Supply / AC Adapter

  • Early: Large “brick” (NUS-002), 3-prong (grounded) plug, 120V only (US).
  • Late: Smaller “wall-wart” (NUS-002A), 2-prong, 100–240V auto-switching.

5. Bottom Label Text

  • Early: “NINTENDO 64” only.
  • Late: “NINTENDO 64 (U)” or “(PAL)” / “(J)”.

6. Motherboard Revision (Requires Opening)

  • CPU-01 / CPU-02: Launch (VR4300 @ 93.75MHz, RDRAM 4MB).
  • CPU-03 / CPU-04: 1998 (better video DAC).
  • CPU-05 / CPU-06 / CPU-07 / CPU-08: 1999+ (Jungle Green, etc., fixed timing bugs).
  • CPU-NUS-1: Final (2002), rare.

Most common: Late model (12-digit serial, trap slot, integrated exp slot, 2-prong PSU). Best video: Early CPU-03/04 + RGB mod (native 240p/480i RGB). Late models need “UltraHDMI” or “RGB amp” mods for clean analog.
