Do You Need External Storage to Download Movies on PS3? Not Necessarily

Not necessarily. The PS3's internal hard drive (20–500 GB depending on model) can store downloaded movies directly.

When Internal Is Enough

• Few movies, SD/720p rips (1–4 GB each).
• You stream mostly (Netflix, Prime, Plex, PS Video).

When External Helps

• Large Library: 20+ Blu-ray rips (20–50 GB each) fill internal fast.
• Offline Viewing: Download on PC → transfer via external (FAT32 4GB limit = split files or use NTFS with PS3 proxy tools).
• Backup: Clone internal to external before drive fails.

Technical Notes

• Filesystem: PS3 reads FAT32 only on external USB. Single file ≤ 4 GB. Use split .m2ts or AVCHD structure for large files.
• Format Support: MP4 (H.264/AAC), AVCHD, MPEG-2 TS. No MKV, HEVC, VP9.
• Legality: Download only content you own/license. Piracy risks console ban.

For most, internal + streaming is fine. External = media server / large local library.
