Using a PS3 Hard Drive in a PC: Not Plug-and-Play, But Data Recovery Possible
You cannot simply plug a PS3 HDD into a PC and use it.
Why
File System: PS3 uses encrypted CellFS (proprietary) on a partitioned GPT. Windows/Linux/macOS cannot read it natively.
Encryption: Tied to specific PS3's EID root key (per-console).
Interface: 2.5" SATA (same as laptop), so physically connects via SATA/USB adapter.
What You Can Do
Data Recovery (Advanced): Use PS3 HDD Decryptor tools (require PS3's EID root key — obtainable only via CFW on *that* PS3). Then mount image to extract saves, screenshots, game data.
Reformat for PC: Connect via USB/SATA dock → Disk Management (Win) / GParted (Linux) / Disk Utility (Mac) → Delete all partitions → New NTFS/exFAT/APFS. Wipes all PS3 data permanently. Works as normal external drive.
Better Option
Buy a new 2.5" SSD/HDD for PC ($20-50). Use PS3's Backup Utility (Settings > System Settings > Backup Utility) to USB drive for saves.
