Spyro: A Hero's Tail on Xbox 360? Not Backward Compatible – Here's How to Play

No. Spyro: A Hero's Tail (2004) was released only for PlayStation 2, GameCube, and Xbox (original). It is not backward compatible on Xbox 360.

Why It Doesn't Work

  • Original Xbox backward compatibility on 360 required Microsoft to create per-title emulation profiles. Only ~460 of ~990 Xbox games were supported.
  • Spyro: A Hero's Tail was never added to the backward compatibility list.
  • No digital re-release on Xbox Live Arcade / Games on Demand.

How to Play It Today

PlatformMethodNotes
Original Xbox Disc (works on any Xbox) Best authentic experience. 480p via component.
PlayStation 2 Disc (PS2/PS3 fat BC) Most common version. 480p (GS mode) or 480i.
GameCube Disc (GC/Wii BC) 480p via component (rare cable). GBA link bonus.
PC (Emulation) PCSX2 (PS2 version) / Dolphin (GC version) Upscaled (4K), widescreen hacks, save states, controller support. Best way to play in 2024.
PC (Original Xbox) Xemu (Xbox emulator) Early stage. Less compatible than PCSX2/Dolphin.

Other Spyro Games on Modern Platforms

  • Spyro Reignited Trilogy (PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC) — Remasters of 1, 2, 3. A Hero's Tail not included.
  • Spyro 1/2/3 (PS1 Classics) — PS3/PSP/Vita via PS Store (closed to new purchases).

Bottom line: Dust off a PS2/GameCube/original Xbox, or fire up PCSX2/Dolphin on PC. Xbox 360 won't run it.
