How to Become a Video Game Reviewer: Step-by-Step Career Guide

Turning game criticism into a career requires writing skill, industry knowledge, and audience building. Here is a practical roadmap:

1. Develop Critical Expertise

  • Play Broadly: Cover genres you dislike. Understand mechanics, design intent, technical performance (frame pacing, bugs).
  • Study Criticism: Read Edge, Game Informer (archives), Polygon, Eurogamer, Waypoint, GameSpot. Watch Game Maker's Toolkit, Mark Brown, Noah Caldwell-Gervais, Joseph Anderson. Analyze how they structure arguments.
  • Learn Design Basics: Read The Art of Game Design (Schell), Rules of Play (Salen/Zimmerman), Level Up! (Rogers). Understand MDA framework (Mechanics, Dynamics, Aesthetics).

2. Build a Portfolio (The "Clips")

  • Start a Blog/Substack/Medium: Publish 1-2 reviews/week. Focus on niche (indie, retro, specific genre) to stand out.
  • Format: 800-1500 words. Structure: Hook -> Context (dev, genre) -> Gameplay Loop Analysis -> Systems/Design Critique -> Technical Performance -> Verdict/Score rationale.
  • Video/Audio: YouTube essays, TikTok/Reels short critiques, Podcast appearances. Diversify format.

3. Gain Visibility & Network

  • Social Media: Twitter/X, Bluesky, LinkedIn. Share clips, engage with devs/editors, thread thoughts on new releases.
  • Communities: r/GameJournalism, Discord servers (Game Dev, Critique circles). Offer feedback on others' work.
  • Events: GDC, PAX, Gamescom, local meetups. Talk to PR, devs, editors.

4. Get Paid Work

  • Freelance Pitching: Target outlets: Vice/Gaming, TheGamer, ScreenRant, DualShockers, TechRaptor, KeenGamer, Try Hard Guides, GameRant, PCGamer (freelance), IGN (freelance). Pitch: "Review: [Game] - [Unique Angle] - 1200 words - Ready by [Date]."
  • Content Mills (Low pay, volume): Valnet, Static Media - good for *first* bylines, not career.
  • Staff Roles: Rare entry-level. Look for "Junior Writer," "SEO Writer," "Guides Writer" at larger sites.

5. Ethics & Professionalism

  • Disclosure: Always note review code source (publisher provided / purchased).
  • Embargoes: Respect NDA/review embargo dates strictly.
  • No Pay-for-Play: Never accept money for coverage positivity.
  • Corrections: Publicly correct factual errors promptly.

Financial Reality

Year 1-2: $0 - $5k (hobby/side hustle). Year 3-5: $15k - $40k (freelance). Staff roles: $40k - $70k+. Top critics: $100k+. It is a long grind. Treat it as a second job initially.
